Running Playlists

Running

Since I’ve been working out (which hasn’t really been more than a semester), I’ve taken rather well to running. I find it pleasant and invigorating. Last semester, I created a running playlist and I found that it wore me out like nothing else. It was unnatural. I had picked out a variety of upbeat, high octane songs that I figured would pump me up to run. Such was a success. However, my body was not in a position to run that hard that much. As such, I switched to a hardcore playlist. However, this had much of the same problem and problems in other ways.

What I’ve found with that playlist is that it provides songs with high BPMs and low BPMs without much in the middle. Metal is like that. With these two cases in mind, I had to come up with a solution.

But running with just a music stream running wouldn’t work either, so I’ve decided to create another playlist for the upcoming semester. I have streamlined it based upon the BPMs on the individual tracks. As such, it has a warm up and a cool down and fluctuation of fast and slower songs. Considering this, it cannot be shuffled. The BPMs rise and fall in accordance with a theoretical guess at endurance and drive. This playlist is untested, but we’ll see how it works.

The Streamlined Running Playlist:

“None Shall Pass” – Aesop Rock
“Help Is On The Way” – Rise Against
“Ditches” – Children 18:3
“Sing To Me” – Before Their Eyes
“Dog Like Vultures” – Haste the Day
“Ocean Avenue” – Yellowcard
“Iodine” – Icon For Hire
“Brick By Boring Brick” – Paramore
“Phenomenon” – Thousand Foot Krutch
“False Pretense” – The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
“Death of Me” – Red
“Pumped Up Kicks” – Foster the People
“The New Breed” – Haste the Day
“Outrage” – Capital Lights
“Rawkfist” – Thousand Foot Krutch
“Hollywood” – Michael Buble
“Man Out of You” – Li Shang

I made another playlist: the Running 160 Playlist. It is different in that all the songs on this playlist fall between 160 and 170 Beats Per Minute. One of 158 may fall in there, but as a majority they’re in the 160’s. It is a harder playlist to run to, I imagine, but it offers more consistency. These can be shuffled at will, so go right ahead and do as you will.

The Running 160 Playlist

“Impossible” – Anberlin
“Outrage” – Capital Lights
“Search Warrant” – Children 18:3
“Final” – Children 18:3
“Sugar, We’re Going Down” – Fall Out Boy
“Jumping the Gun” – Hyland
“Theater”- Icon For Hire
“Make a Move” – Icon For Hire
“Get Well” – Icon For Hire
“All You Ever Hear” – Ivoryline
“Remind Me I’m Alive” –Ivoryline
“The New Breed” – Haste the Day
“Breathing Blood” – Haste the Day
“The Calendar” – Panic! At the Disco

I have a friend who listens to “Awake and Alive” by Skillet before every race.

Personally, I’ve never really been much of a music-while-running guy – I run for the sake of running, and don’t want a distraction.

I hear that a lot of people don’t like running with music, and I can certainly see where it could become a hindrance. Personally, though, I find that music keeps me company as I run, making the experience far more enjoyable.

But I’m finding, more and more, that it’s an incredibly individual thing. =]

  2. WTF!How the hell is this number one, he should have at least included Electric Avenue, but noo SOME people have no taste in music. I have like 3 playlist and thay all have more than 180 songs.

    • Ian Williams says:

While “Electric Avenue” is a marvelous song, it has a BPM of only 120. This doesn’t work for anything better than a brisk walk. Running to “Electric Avenue” just wouldn’t work out very well.

Secondly, taste is a purely subjective matter. You could argue the point if such pleases you, but in doing so, you would only succeed in making yourself look like an arrogant Internet troll. By debating taste and quality of music, you display an incredibly dim grasp on the point of the post, leading me to doubt whether you actually read it. The post was a short, life-based narrative involving lists that some people may, at some point, find helpful. Your tirade and attempt at sarcasm was unfortunate and unfounded. Short and simple, nobody cares. Get over yourself.

Last semester when me and my best friend were training for a 5K and we were getting worn out, we’d listen to ‘Hollywood’ and ‘Rawkfist’! Also ‘Smack Down’ by TFK B-) Very nice playlists you’ve arranged *thumbs up*

    • Ian Williams says:

      Why thank you. =]
5k sounds to me like a very large amount of distance-based measuring units to me. As such, I will offer my admiration and slink back into to shadows with my not-so-manly inadequacy.

I’m not a running person; if I exercise it’s usually on a stationary bike during which time I listen to music, because, like you, I like to have some muscial accompaniment. I tend to stay with a dance, metal/hardcore, and pop playlist which I find helps me stay where I want to be while riding. I don’t go the extra mile to find out how many BPMs there are though and list it in that manner. XD Very smart of you though. ^_^

    • Ian Williams says:

I like running. It makes me feel epic.
      Also half dead.
      But epic.

But I certainly get what you’re saying about music keeping you where you want to be. I find that the selection of music very strongly influences my drive, determination, and desire to run. Without music, I think I would run less intensely and stop earlier.

      • Carmen says:

Mhmm, I know for a fact I do not work as hard without my music. Before I had noticed after riding the bike with out music burned around 50 fewer calories (it has a little digital speed, distance, and calorie counter on it). So music is super helpful. :D I find I’ll stay longer just so I can finishing listening to a song.
